Dutch truck toll takes effect: what changes for container transport
Since 1 July 2026 the Netherlands has a truck toll: a distance-based charge for trucks heavier than 3,500 kg, covering nearly all motorways and a number of provincial roads. For road container transport, that means a new cost per kilometer.
What you pay
The rate applies per kilometer driven and depends on the weight of the truck and its CO2 emission class. Cleaner and lighter means a lower rate. On average it comes to around 0.19 euro per kilometer.
From 1 September through 31 December 2026 a temporary discount of 22.3 percent applies to the rate, to soften the rollout.
What disappears in return
Alongside the toll, the Eurovignette is abolished and the motor vehicle tax for trucks goes down. The net proceeds of the toll flow back to the transport sector, for sustainability and innovation.
What it means for your container shipment
The toll touches nearly every kilometer a container travels on Dutch motorways. Carriers are citing an expected cost increase of 7 to 8 percent. That estimate dates from before the rollout; the real impact will become clear over the coming months.
